Well, if it’s a Secret Service code name, perhaps a lot. Candidates, apparently, get to choose their own names while on the campaign trail. In ’08, Obama chose ‘Renegade.’ Snazzy. And for Mrs. Obama: ‘Renaissance.’ All that hopey-changey stuff, I suppose. This time around, Mitt Romney chose ‘Javelin,’ which may be a reference to a model that American Motors Corporation manufactured while his father was the head of the firm. A bit odd, but hey, at least there’s a connection.
And for Santorum? Petrus. As in the Latin form of Peter. Also as in: ‘And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.’ Matthew 16:18. I remember hearing a former Santorum Senate staffer once say something along the lines that Santorum wasn’t so much a politician so much as he’s more a Catholic missionary who happens to be in the Senate. If his campaign is any indicator, along with his Secret Service moniker, I’d say that’s about right.
