For the first time in the US, women earned more doctoral degress than men did. 28,962 women earned doctorates in the 2008-2009 academic year, as did 28,469 men. Women have long been making strides in the area of higher education, as they now outnumber men in both graduate and undergraduate programs. The reason that the demographic shift in terms of gender took so long in the case of doctorates is that men have long held a decisive advantage in areas such as mathematics, engineering, physics, etc. to the point where for every female doctoral candidate, she had four male counterparts.
I think, overall, that this is a good thing. I don’t want to see women get too far ahead of men, academically speaking, as I think aiming for balance would be optimal. But this is just another met benchmark on the long haul towards total, complete and full equality for women. Congratulations Ladies!
